Introducing Jazz to Students with Aman Mahajan

Join pianist, composer, and educator Aman Mahajan for a hands-on workshop designed to make jazz accessible and engaging for students of all levels. 

In this session, we will explore jazz as a practice of listening, responding, and interacting deeply. Participants will engage in simple activities to help students hear and follow common jazz forms, including 12-bar blues and AABA. We’ll cover swing rhythms through listening, singing, and notation shorthand, and introduce the dynamic language of bebop with a few basic phrases. The workshop also includes guided listening to classic jazz styles and provides time for discussion and questions.

About Aman Mahajan:

Aman Mahajan is an Indian pianist and composer whose work spans jazz, improvisation, and contemporary Indian music. He leads projects such as REFUGE, Tinctures, and Mystik Vibes, and has collaborated with artists including Radha Thomas, Apoorva Krishna, and Nishad Pandey. His music blends structured composition with improvisation, drawing inspiration from personal experience, philosophy, and a rich tapestry of musical traditions.

Aman approaches improvisation as a tool for listening, conversation, and creative expression, making complex musical ideas accessible to learners of all levels. Based in Bangalore, he performs internationally at festivals and venues across Europe and India, and actively contributes to the contemporary music scene through teaching, workshops, and curating performances. Through his work, Aman creates inclusive and engaging musical experiences that foster connection, dialogue, and a deeper understanding of jazz and improvisation for both students and audiences.
